Serves: 4, Difficulty: Easy

Preparation time: 20 minutes, Cooking time: 50 minutes

Ingredients

  • 400 grams minced lamb
  • 4 slices of white bread
  • 2 potatoes, peeled and cubed
  • 2 onions, finely chopped
  • 3 tomatoes, chopped
  • 20 grams curry powder
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 20 grams fresh ginger, minced
  • 10 grams ground cumin
  • 10 grams ground coriander
  • 10 grams chili powder
  • 10 grams salt
  • 5 grams ground pepper
  • 50 ml white vinegar
  • 50 ml olive oil
  • 200 ml water

Method

  • Preheat your oven to 180°C.
  • Soak the white bread slices in water, then squeeze out the excess water and set the bread aside.
  • In a large pan, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add the finely chopped onions and sauté until they are translucent.
  • Stir in the minced garlic, ginger, curry powder, ground cumin, ground coriander, and chili powder. Cook for another 2 minutes until the spices are aromatic.
  • Add the minced lamb to the pan, breaking it up with a spoon, and cook until it is browned.
  • Incorporate the chopped tomatoes, soaked bread, salt, and pepper. Allow the mixture to cook for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until it is well blended.
  • Pour the mixture into an oven-safe dish and bake for 30 minutes.
  • In another pan, heat a little olive oil and add the cubed potatoes. Sauté for 5 minutes.
  • Add the curry powder and a pinch of salt to the potatoes, and stir well. Pour in 200 ml of water and white vinegar, and cook until potatoes are tender and the water has evaporated.
  • Serve the Bobotie with the curried potatoes on the side, garnished with fresh coriander if desired.

Tips

  • For an extra touch of authenticity, serve the Bobotie with a side of Mrs. Ball’s Chutney.
  • Ensure the bread is well soaked and mixed into the meat for a tender and flavorful Bobotie.
  • Add a fresh salad with a tangy vinaigrette for a balanced meal.
