Serves: 2, Difficulty: Expert

Ingredients

  • 300 g sushi rice
  • 60 ml rice vinegar
  • 15 g sugar
  • 4 g salt
  • 4 nori sheets
  • 200 g fresh tuna or salmon, thinly sliced
  • 1 cucumber, julienned
  • 1 avocado, sliced
  • Soy sauce (for dipping)
  • Pickled ginger (for serving)
  • Wasabi (for serving)

Method

  • Rinse the sushi rice in cold water until the water runs clear. This removes excess starch and results in a better texture for the rice.
  • Cook the sushi rice in 600 ml of water until tender. Allow it to steam for an additional 10 minutes with the lid on, off the heat.
  • In a small bowl, mix rice vinegar, sugar, and salt until the sugar and salt are completely dissolved.
  • Transfer the cooked rice to a large bowl and gently fold in the rice vinegar mixture. Allow the rice to cool to room temperature.
  • Lay a nori sheet on a bamboo sushi mat, shiny side down. With wet hands, spread a thin layer of sushi rice evenly over the nori, leaving a 1 cm border on the top edge.
  • Arrange thin slices of tuna or salmon, julienned cucumber, and sliced avocado in a horizontal line across the rice.
  • Using the bamboo mat, carefully roll the nori sheet over the filling ingredients, pressing gently to form a tight roll.
  • Repeat the process for the remaining nori sheets and ingredients.
  • Using a sharp, wet knife, slice the sushi rolls into bite-sized pieces.
  • Serve the sushi rolls with soy sauce, pickled ginger, and a small dollop of wasabi on the side.

Tips

  • Wet your hands and knife to prevent the rice from sticking.
  • Use the freshest fish you can find to ensure the best taste and texture.
  • Serve immediately for the best texture and flavor experience.
