Ingredients

  • 2 slices of bread (approx. 60 grams)
  • 50 grams cheddar, sliced
  • 1 small onion, thinly sliced (approx. 50 grams)
  • 2 lettuce leaves
  • 1 medium tomato, sliced (approx. 120 grams)
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil (approx. 15 ml)
  • 1 teaspoon basil, fresh or dried (approx. 1 gram)
  • Salt, to taste
  • Black pepper, to taste

Method

  1. Begin by gently heating the olive oil in a small skillet over medium heat.
  2. Add the thinly sliced onions to the skillet and sauté until they are golden and caramelized, about 5-7 minutes. Season with a pinch of salt and pepper.
  3. Lightly toast the slices of bread until they are golden and slightly crispy.
  4. Layer the lettuce leaves on one slice of the toasted bread.
  5. Add the fresh tomato slices on top of the lettuce.
  6. Layer the caramelized onions over the tomatoes.
  7. Place the cheddar slices on the onions, then sprinkle with basil and a touch more salt and pepper to taste.
  8. Top with the second slice of toasted bread and gently press the sandwich together.
  9. Cut the sandwich in half and serve immediately, enjoying the beautiful blend of fresh and savory flavors.

Tips

  • For added crunch, you can toast the sandwich in a skillet till the cheddar melts.
  • Fresh basil leaves can be a beautiful garnishing touch if you are using dried basil inside the sandwich.
  • Serve with a glass of fresh orange juice or a cup of your favorite tea or coffee to complete the meal.
