Somali-Inspired Spiced Goat and Basmati Delight

Ingredients

  • 150 grams Basmati rice
  • 400 grams Goat meat, cubed
  • 1 large Onion, finely chopped
  • 3 cloves of Garlic, minced
  • 200 grams Tomatoes, chopped
  • 1 teaspoon Cumin
  • 1 teaspoon Cardamom
  • 1 teaspoon Cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon Cloves
  • 50 grams Raisins
  • 50 grams Ghee
  • 1 teaspoon Salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon Pepper
  • 1 teaspoon Turmeric
  • 1 tablespoon Coriander, chopped
  • 300 ml Water

Method

  • In a large pot, heat ghee and sauté the chopped onions until golden brown.
  • Add minced garlic and sauté for a further two minutes until fragrant.
  • Add the goat meat and brown it on all sides, stirring occasionally.
  • Mix in the chopped tomatoes, cumin, cardamom, cinnamon, cloves, salt, pepper, and turmeric. Stir well and let it cook for 5 minutes.
  • Add 300 ml of water, cover the pot, and let it simmer for about 60 minutes, until the goat meat is tender.
  • In a separate pot, cook the basmati rice with 300 ml of water and a pinch of salt for about 15 minutes, until the rice is tender.
  • Once the meat is tender, add the raisins and chopped coriander. Stir well and let it cook for an additional 5 minutes.
  • Serve the goat and spice mixture over a bed of basmati rice and garnish with additional coriander.

  • For a deeper flavor, marinate the goat meat in the spices for an hour before cooking.

  • Serve with a side of fresh coriander and yogurt for a cooling balance.
